Re: objects_for_Sims2 OT Junk Mail - THIS is not Junk Mail, its a query about it

Thank you for the information Vodor.

It's a good trick as far as it goes - i'm forced to tick and delete rather than report it as spam.  Which is annoying but since i already *weed* my incoming emails before i go thru them, not a really big deal.  What it DOES do is set me more firmly against spammers, so while the trick is good in terms of inbox access, it's self-defeating.   Who benefits? Any anti-spam campaign that previously i might have ignored and am now far more likely to support.

Hope life is good for you *smiles*

They do it by harvesting millions of email addresses. Then they spam these people. They have scripts they use to make it appear that the email address is from yourself. They do this because they know that you'll put them in the "spam" or junk mail file. This trick will then put all the email addressed to you in the spam file, good and bad alike. What they can't hide is their IP address. Most spam filters now place the offending IP adress in the junk file now, because most of the reply-to adresses are bogus (or are copies of each victim's own email address) and the anti-spam programmers all know that. So what is being blocked now is the IP address. Each IP adress corresponds to an actual physical adress (of the server, at least). I think you can see that this is a never-ending war.

That Ask Leo is a great site!  Ok, so i figured out from there that what is happening to me is called "spoofing" where the spammer LIES about where the email is coming from - tsk tsk tsk.  They haven't hacked me, they are just using my account name in the "from" section.  How do they do this? Dunno.  How do i stop it?  I can't.  So it's annoying but not dangerous, unless i actually followed any links in the things - NOT going to happen.

Since it doesn't seem to be happening to anyone on my contact list, it seems that the spammer was targetting me, thinking i'd be curious enough to open one.  Ok i was, but i didn't follow the link.  I can't report it as spam coz i'd be reporting myself, just have to delete them as they arrive.

That site is definitely worth a stroll around, and each article has related links at the bottom of it.

Thank you all for your help *smiles*  The end result, i've tightened the security of my email account and found out what is happening - life is good!

Sounds like you've picked up a virus or worse. Run a virus scan.
You need to install and run a good anti-virus/malware and use an ad block. In fact I would use several of the free anti virus downloads you can get, some seem to catch what others don't. I also use "spybot search & destroy" also free.
You may want to warn your friends. Any of the mail sent using your address could be infected.

Re: objects_for_Sims2 OT Junk Mail - THIS is not Junk Mail, its a query about it

Thank you all for your advice.  I have virus protection and firewalls and spybot stuff.  I have changed my password several times, and just deleted everyone from my address book except family.

I had many people in my address book and no-one told me they were getting junkmail from me.  Having asked here, no-one of you who i had in my address book has told me that you have received any from me.  I was worried that that was what was happening since i'm getting junkmail, seemingly FROM me, but maybe not?

Even so, i'll check out the link Su-Sim, thank you.

So my question is... has anyone received junkmail from me??? and if you have... how the hell did this happen?  It means someone has hijacked my addressbook, obviously, but i don't know how or how to stop it.  Please let me know, and i stress its not coming from "me" but some weird hijack thing.  Nevertheless, if it is happening, i apologise.
